Getting Back On Track After the Holidays

Many people are still escaping the holiday hangover with thoughts of returning to their normal diet, their normal schedule and they’re regaining a sense of order as real life starts up again, so, in order to help you “bounce back” after the eggnog, the drinking, and your aunt’s famous pie, we are sharing a few ways to help you feel like yourself again after the holidays.

First off: can you prevent the Holiday Hangover? Sure you can. But almost everybody who celebrates the holidays ends up eating their fair share of calorie dense foods and swerving off their normal training schedule, so the question isn’t really how to completely prevent indulgence and laziness, but how to make “bouncing back” a lot easier.

If you are mindful of how you spend your holiday, you can avoid the misery of having a food baby and focus more on actually communing with family and friends. That doesn’t mean you should avoid the “bad foods” at all costs and complain that the gym isn’t open on Christmas Eve (because do you really want to be that person?), it just means that you should recognize that there’s a difference between a cheat meal and an “Oh-my-god, I-haven’t-had-my-grandma’s-mashed-potatoes-in-ten-years” kind of meal. Five meals in a row of the latter sort and most people won’t feel like themselves.

You probably don’t feel like yourself because you are reading this article, just admit it, you ate not one, not two, but three plates of food! It’s okay, so did I and I felt like four months of hard work had flown out the window. Not so. Here’s a list of things you can do to get back on track as soon as possible:

1) Drink Water. Yes, I said it, and yes I am chastising you. I know you had that cappuccino in the morning and those Mojitos at night. You need to grab a glass of water right now and chug that thing, because you probably came out of the holidays less hydrated. Think about it: caffeine is a stimulant and alcohol is a depressant, but they both have a diuretic effect. This constant energy and hydration imbalance is very taxing on the body.

2) If you didn’t miss a single training session, good for you! Keep doing what you are doing. But if you haven’t stepped foot in a gym for over two weeks it would not make any sense to try to train harder or heavier than you did before. For the first week, see if you maintained and then adjust accordingly.

3) Foam-Rolling, stretching, mobility work, these are all great tools not only for your regular training, but for those days when you know things are a bit rusty.

4) Getting enough sleep should already be high on your priority list because your muscles need sleep as much as your mind does, but oftentimes, it’s hard to do this right after a holiday because there are errands, chores, family duties, etc. Though there is a large range of what doctors believe to be the “ideal” amount of sleep, listen to your body and adjust based on your performance.

5) Relax. Nobody loses their progress, gains, or strength within the short window of a few weeks. Don’t harbor guilt about the holidays, they’re supposed to be a time of joy. If you spend too much time thinking about the past, you lose sight of your goals and cannot plan for the future.

Get Your Mind Right

Your mind is what stands between you and your goals. It's what stands between you and any challenge that life throws your way. If there is something that you want you must believe in that with every ounce of your being. Look life happens. There are minor set backs and major setbacks. But life isn't perfect. And it shouldn't be.

Look time comes and time goes. People always want more of it but all they seem to do is waste it. If you have a dream if you have a goal then nothing should stand in your way. But if you make excuses then you truly don't want those dreams to be come a reality.

You should never give up on something that you truly believe in. In my eyes, if you don’t have to work for something, it isn’t really worth it. If you set your goals high and work your ass off to reach them, you will feel like you deserve it. When you have a problem in life, have the balls (courage) to face it head on.

Figure out what the problem is and then make a plan to solve it. If you don’t offer a solution to your problems, don’t complain because, because nobody cares. Be quiet because nobody cares about your problems if you aren’t offering a solution or doing something to change your situation.

Winners adjust. Successful people face adversity and kick the hell out of it. If you want something bad enough, quitting isn’t an option. Quitting is for losers. People today are coddled and need to stop making excuses. Society as a whole is weak-minded, frail, and gutless.

Challenge yourself. Everyday. Step outside your comfort zone. Confidence to succeed will come when you prepare life your life depends on it. Don't ever put a limit on your ability to grow as a person.

Stop making excuses. Get your mind right and go after what is you truly want in life. If you have excuses take them else where. Do what it takes to get it done. Embrace the process. Don't lose your sight at the first sign of failure. Look forward to the challenges of life. Embrace them. Raise your standards. Do something better today than yesterday. You are not meant to remain stagnant and complacent.

Stop preparing to live and start actually living.

Supporting other people's goals

There are a lot of articles, tips, and tricks on accomplishing your own goals, but what about when someone you care about has a goal to set?  It should be important to you, if they're important to you, but regardless of how much you care about someone, you may be trying to sabotage them and not even know it!  Here is a quick guide for you to take a step back, assess the steps they're taking to reach a goal, and figure out how you can make that goal attainable.

1. DO NOT feel like they should make an exception for you! If they are taking care of business, and they are not neglecting you, stop trying to make them feel like you're the exception to the rule.  If they're dieting, don't tell them they should eat your cake because YOU made it.  Don't even offer it to them.  If they have a goal of sticking to a schedule, be it for training, school, or work, do not expect them to drop everything for you.   Make time elsewhere.

2. DO ask them about their goals and what you can do to help!  Accomplishing large tasks, regardless of how much determination a person has, can be extremely difficult, especially if they feel like they are alone.  Get involved.  Ask them what you can do.  A lot of the extremely high level athletes I know usually have something in common... a strong support system (ie, significant other, parents, siblings) that will help them with cooking meals, making sure they have the right equipment packed, and making sure they are staying on schedule.

3. DO NOT tell them you told them so when they fail, but also, do not sugar coat things. The one constant in trying to be great is failure.  It happens to everybody.  Be encouraging.  Help them evaluate their situation, and then help them draw a plan to overcome obstacles.  Sometimes, the biggest push a person needs to reach a goal is someone that they can trust honestly telling them they can do it.

4. DO remind them that there is life outside of their goals.  People can get engulfed in their work, regardless of what it is, believe me, I know. It's nice to have someone remind you that you're doing something because you love it, and not because it defines you.

Follow these steps, and you will definitely help that special someone be the best person they can be.

ATHLETES: this has to be a reciprocal relationship.  Your goals are YOUR goals, not everybody else's.  If someone is supporting you, support them back, and let them know you appreciate everything they do.

Don't make resolutions, make good

deb progressionIt's that time of year when people start to look back at what has happened the year before and what they want to happen in the year ahead.  Most people make the mistake of putting forth a new years resolution that is unrealistic.  Let's face it, if you haven't worked out in 10 years, the odds of you training 7 days/week in about the same as you winning the lottery.  So don't make some crazy resolution like this, instead make a resolution that you are going to make one attainable "resolution" per week.  Week One could be to join a gym.  Week two could be to go to that gym 2x/wk.  Week Three could be to clean up your awful diet a little bit.   After 52 weeks of these little victories, you will be surprised at just how much you have been able to change your life.

These little weekly victories not only help you feel like a success but they also lead you to your ultimate goal of a better looking and healthier you.  People can handle small tasks that are defined in front of them, but a large task with no direction seems overwhelming and will most likely never happen.  If you just focus on one small task per week then over the course of the next year you will make more changes than you have over the last 10 years of your grandiose resolutions that never quite happened.  I know that something like going to the gym 2x/wk seems like it wouldn't make a huge difference but honestly for someone who isn't working out, just going for a walk 2x/wk can make a big change.

This year don't just make a resolution, make good by setting one small goal per week and attaining it.   If you aren't sure where to begin when it comes to your fitness or your eating then come see one of the great personal trainers at The Spot and they will not only get you on the right path, but keep you there so you make long lasting changes.

The fastest way to get fit & look great

This is a secret that many of the fitness magazines never tell you because they don't want you to know the truth.  The fastest way to get fit and look good is to lift weights, do cardio and follow a diet free from processed foods on a long term consistent basis.  Wait a minute you are saying, that doesn't sound easy or fast, and it isn't.  There are no shortcuts to fitness or looking good.  If there were then everyone would look great and be fit.  These commercials for this new miracle product or that are really miracles, as in it's a miracle that people are stupid enough to actually buy it.

The fact is that consistency in your training and your eating will over a long time yield great results.  I always look at loosing 1/2% of body fat per week as a good goal.  This means that if you are 25% body fat then you will lose 10% body fat and be at a very respectable 15% in 20 weeks.  Although this seems like a long time, think about it in terms of how much fat you have put on in the last 6 months.  In this age of instant text messaging and instant everything else, the one thing that has no instant solution is your health.

I know what I am saying doesn't sound sexy and appealing and that is why you never hear anyone in popular media talk about it.  They just show pictures of ripped people smiling and capture it with "look how easy it is".  Fact is that it is not easy and those people in the magazine pictures only look like that for a few weeks out of the year for the photo shoot.  What they don't show is the hours upon hours that they spend in the gym and the eating they do, the food prep and the years of dedication.  They want you to believe that if you just take their product then you can look like the model in the picture.  This is false advertising and you should be aware of it.

Although we don't promise instant results and the newest fitness craze, what we do promise is that you will get fit and looking great by following our tried and true means of getting you to your goals.  We won't promise it will be easy or that you won't mess up on your diet but we will promise to motivate you the whole way and pick you up when you stumble.  These are the things that we do that separate us and by being up front and explaining what it takes to get to your individual goals, you are at aware of what is to come.  This approach has made some people not want to train with us because we tell them it is not going to be easy and what it really takes to reach their goals instead of the standard "it's so easy, just join our gym" crap that is peddled at other facilities.  I guess this doesn't make us the best sales people but we pride ourselves on being the best trainers, not the best sales people.  We just know that in the long run the people who are serious about reaching their goals will seek us out because they want the best trainers, not sales people who sell the "get fit quick" fantasy.

If you know someone who is serious about reaching their New Years resolutions then send them this blog and tell them to get ahold of us.  They may not like the truth of what it takes, but they will love the results we get.

Know Your Goal (and know how to train for it)

Between Facebook, Instagram, and every terrible/legitimate website dedicated to getting stronger, faster, jacked, yoked, shredded, explosive, aesthetic, hyooge, etc. there is a plethora of individuals and sources to follow on your path to greatness. The vast amount of resources and information at our fingertips is great but, at the same time, it’s easy to get caught up following people and programs that may not be right for your goals. For the seasoned iron pumper this is probably not an issue but for the pencil neck n00b (or the vast majority of people), this can be a real issue. Before you follow some random program because the dude who wrote it is really vascular or has a monster squat, it’s important to know your goal then figure out what you need to do to get there. I think a flow chart might be nice for this but given that my technology skills are on par with an ornery old person, I’ll stick with this.

Are you an athlete? Then don’t follow a bodybuilding program. Don’t follow a powerlifting program. Yes, powerlifting will make you strong but powerlifting is a sport. As a soccer, volleyball, football, lacrosse, etc player you need to be strong but your goal isn’t (and shouldn’t be) to have a bar bending bench. You shouldn’t even be hitting heavy singles on your lifts. Because that’s not the point of your weight room training. Likewise, you shouldn’t do crossfit. Crossfit is a sport. It’s not programmed to make you better at your sport.

Do you want to get strong? You probably shouldn't be following a cutting bodybuilding program. Doing volume based and isolation work will not be the most beneficial when it comes to improving your patterns and overall strength. Furthermore, for the most part, it’s good to be a little chubs for powerlifting. Good for your joints and good for bouncing your stomach off your thighs when you squat. Granted, there are a lot of great, super cut powerliters. But, the point of the sport is not to be vascular and have the biggest bicep peak. Some powerlifters do great with high volume training but don’t get caught up in trying to do too much with the wrong program or your strength will suffer.

Before I started powerlifting, I did random bodybuilding stuff that I found on the internet. I wanted to be strong but didn’t have a concrete goal or any concept of training for said goals. Needless to say, I didn’t make very good progress for a number of years until I dialed into my goal and figured out the training that was most effective to get there.  Make sure you have a concrete goal and are following a program that’s in line with those goals or else you’ll be spinning your wheels wondering why you’re not making progress.

Seven Tips to Survive Thanksgiving

It’s that time of year. It’s the holidays. Family, friends and awesome food. But most of you will freak out about the holiday weight gain. Just google Thanksgiving and weight gain and you’ll come up with a ton of articles on how to stay thin for the holidays. They say the average thanksgiving meal is 3,500 calories. Sounds like a solid bulking session if you ask me. But in all seriousness unless you are dieting down for a bodybuilding show enjoy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the food. Enjoy the company. You won’t gain any weight from one day of cheat meals. It’s not going to sabotage your gains bro, I promise. Stop worrying about cutting 100 calories if you don’t eat the crust with your pie. You’ve been training extremely hard all year, well most of us have and you should be able to enjoy the holidays with your friends and family instead of being miserable over thinking you can’t eat all the good food because you’ll instantly get fat. Sorry the body doesn’t get fat in one day nor in one meal. It’s science so that means it’s true. Now I’m not saying stuff your face till you are so uncomfortable that you can’t move, I mean thats what my training partners and I will do but I don’t suggest that to any of you. So here are

Seven Tips to Survive Thanksgiving

1: Portion control. Select your favorite foods that you can’t live without and select reasonable-sized protions. I suggest you don’t waste your calories on foods you can have all year though, eat the foods that only come out once a year. But here is a secret if you keep your portions small, you can enjoy whatever you like.

2: Workout Thanksgiving morning on an empty stomach. Have it be a serious weight session or just a walk. Get some exercise in and do it on an empty stomach. Your gains will be alright. I’m a big fan of training in a fasted state because it works.

3: Your best bets if you are concerned are white meat, plain veggies, sweet potatoes (not the sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, maple syurp and all that), mashed potatoes, defatted gravy and that delicious pumpkin pie. Those tend to be lower in fat and calories.

4: Don’t inhale your food. Eat slow. Enjoy the conversation at the table. Actually taste and enjoy the food.

5: Eat in the afternoon. Spread the fest out all day. After dinner go outside. Go for a walk. Play football. Enjoy the cool weather. After that come in and have dessert. Watch a movie. Don’t try and cram 4,000 calories into one sitting.

6: Relax on the sugary drinks and alcohol. A lot of calories in drinks and they add up quick.

7: Don’t focus on food. Don’t focus on weight gain (unless you are bulking) or weight loss. Enjoy your friends. Enjoy your family. Celebrate and be thankful for your friends and family. That’s what this holiday is all about.

Happy Thanksgiving

How to Find the Right "Diet"

New diets seem to be popping up every day, that claim to be the most perfect diet to end all diets forever. How do you know which one is right for you? Let’s take a look at some fad (and no so fad) diets and see what they’re made of.

Clean eating- good old fashioned meat and vegetables. This one shouldn’t need a lot of explanation. The rationale is that if you eat well and avoid processed foods, your caloric intake won’t be ridiculously high, you won’t binge out on simple carbs, and your body will get all the nutrients and macronutrients it needs and it will run like a well oiled machine. Sounds pretty solid so no one needs to invent anymore diets, right? Wrong.

If It Fits Your Macros- aka “#IIFYM”. You probably see IIFYM-ers hashtagging pictures of their ice cream to death on instagram followed by an unnecessarily long caption about their life shattering journey from clean eating to IIFYM. IIFYM just means that you have a certain allotment of macronutrients you have to eat a day (no more, no less), and you can meet the criteria however you want. That means you can eat donuts and steak all day as long as your macro requirements are met.

Paleo- clean to the extreme. Hypothetically only eating what cavemen ate. Meat, vegetables, fish. No potatoes, sugar, grains, etc. There is some skepticism regarding the science this diet is based on.

Carb back loading- Very low carb the vast majority of the time and then consuming a larger quantity of carbs post-workout.

As you can see, all of these diets take vastly different approaches. However, here are two things every diet has in common- they regulate your caloric intake and macronutrient consumption.

So how do you know which is right for you? Here’s the answer (that is applicable to 1000% of things in life)- there is not ons solution for everyone. The keys to a good “diet” are twofold

  1. Something you can commit to

The most important part of a diet is being able to stick with it. Heck, make your own diet or take bits and pieces of some until you find something you can tolerate for the long run. If you follow something for a few weeks, it works, then you binge uncontrollably, that’s not very sustainable.

        2. Something that works for your body type
Everyone reacts differently to different foods, eating habits, and macronutrients. If you don’t tolerate sugar and dairy well, avoid them. If you do and they don’t negatively impact your body then go ahead.

As long as you regulate your calories and are not in a large caloric surplus, are regulating your macronutrients based on your individual needs, and can sustain your habits long term, then you will be successful in your “diet”.

21 Day Challenge

SuccessThis week I am going to take a little break from the Nutrition learning series as there is something that is bugging me. Everybody is talking about this diet or that diet. If it fits your macros this, intermittent fasting that and hey what about paleo. Then carb back loading, carb night, carb front loading and carb all day loading. Most of you need to stop worrying about all these different diets. Most of you need a new relationship with food. You can’t seriously tell me that you don’t know the difference between whats good for you and whats not good for you. If you would just make small changes over time you will see results. You just need to be consistent with what you are doing and any of those previous diets would work for you. But most of you get up in arms if you don’t have ABs within a week of a diet and are quick to dismiss the diet and give up. 21 days. 21 days is how long it takes to form a habit. Can you commit yourself to that? 21 days. I am going to give you guidelines to follow for 21 days. Comment below or on our facebook page to let us know you started it and then contact us 21 days later to follow up. 21 days is a short amount of time in the grand scheme of things and if you can’t dedicate yourself to 21 days of eating healthy then you don’t want it bad enough. So if you fall off the bandwagon start over.

Guidelines

1: Eliminate sugar
2: Drink more water. And when you think you’ve had enough. Drink more.
3: Cut out the booze
4: Do some form of exercise 5 days a week 30-60 minutes
5: Replace sugar with healthy fats
6: Eliminate gluten
7: Remove grains, grain derived oils and vegetable oils.
8: Eliminate all synthetic additives, colorings and flavorings
9: Eat significant amounts of lean protein (beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, fish, eggs)
10: Remove all dairy
11: Eat more fruits and veggies. Organic is good with these foods but it isn't always important for some food. Use this site to figure out whats good and whats not http://www.whatsonmyfood.org/
12: Add spices and herbs
13: Enjoy your food. Do not count calories. Eat until satiety and then stop.
14: Nourishing your mind and body is not optional
15: Change your mindset. All a diet is, is the way you eat. Don’t look at it as a bad thing.

Leave your comments. Share with the world.

Your nutrition questions answered: is the ALF diet right for you?

Nutrition Questions Answered Part 2 by Nic Bronkall BS, CSCS

Last week I posted on our facebook wall asking what your top nutrition questions were. Well here are your questions answered to the best of my professional ability. These recommendations are not medical guidelines but are for educational purposes only. You must consult your physician if you have any medical condition or injury that contraindicates physical activity and certian dietary guidelines. Now do not take my responses as the end all be all. Question everything, use what is useful and get ride of what is useless!

What is the best way for me to study up on and understand macro (maybe micro) nutrients?

Either use google, buy a biochemistry book or purchase Knowledge and Nonsense by Jamie Hale http://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=136&pid=2543This book has a lot from basic nutrition to the sicience behind popular diets to kinesiology and biomechanics.

How do you beat the belly bulge?

I’m assuming the belly bulge is lower abdominal adipose tissue. This is usually the hardest to place to get rid of fat. You can workout as much as you want but you can’t out lift a fork. Meaning if your diet isn’t on point (lots of junk processed food along with alcohol) you will never beat the bulge.

I really like this milk, I don't eat red meat and not eating fish often. I first bought it because I saw it had the B12 and Folic acid in it. I think it has some good fats in it, am I looking at the right? I am however drinking the vanilla, which has rice syrup in it, but that is the one I like. Also a little afraid I will test positive in a drug test, but I still like it. What do you think of the nutritional value in this milk?

First issue here is that you don’t eat red meat and fish. That needs to be fixed in your diet now. But your question was on hemp milk. I’ve never had it. There are a lot of vitamins and minerals in it. Also, it doesn’t contain high levels of enzyme inhibitors or oligosaccharides. There really isn’t a lot of fat in hempmilk per serving. According to the link you provided me there is 6g per serving 4.5g coming from polyunsaturated. I’d rather see somebody have more grassfed beef and salmon in their diet to get their healthy fats. I wouldn’t be afraid of testing positive in a drug test. It’s a good replacement for milk but I wouldn’t use it as your main source of fat and other nutrients.

When looking to put on size and strength what numbers should you follow for macros (carb, protein and fats). I see all of the diets like carbnite, carb backloading but never took the bait. The goal would be to lose fat if possible while trying to maximize muscle gain?

There are a lot of variabilities in such a broad questions as this. How long have you been lifting? How many days a week do you train? How long do you train? What’s your current body weight? What is your current body fat percentage? Are you trying to be a bodybuilder or are you trying to be as strong as possible? Just eat healthy and train hard. Lots of eggs, red meat, fish and healthy carbs. The goal is to be consistent and eat healthy.

Are Omega 3 gel capsules good for men over 45 to take?

I was unable to find any studies or research to say it was bad for men over 45 to take. Just make sure the Omega 3 gel capsules you take have a purity of at least 50%. To calculate the purity of fish oil, divide the amount of combined EPA and DHA by the total amount of fat in a serving size.

Example

Brand A has .18 grams of EPA and .12 grams of DHA per 1 gram capsule.

.18 + .12 = .3 grams (300 mg)

.3/1g (amount of fat per serving/capsule)=.3 or 30%

Brand B has .65 grams of EPA + .45 grams of DHA per 1 gram capsule

.65+.45=1.1 grams (1100mg)

1.1g/2g = .55 or 55%

Also make sure you are eating meats that are high in omega 3’s

Is my cannibalistic lifestyle harmful or helpful?

Depends. Harmful or helpful to who?

Would you recommend Alf's alternative diet that consists primarily of cats? If so, are there any specific breeds? i.e. - calico, siamese, or (my favorite) ragamuffin?

Yes I am a big fan of Alf’s alternative diet that consists primarily of cats. It leads to unbelievable muscle gains and keeps the fat off. Science isn’t caught up to it yet but cat in copious amounts is recommended. I am a big fan of the ragamuffin.

This is obviously a joke. If you don’t know who Alf is youtube him.

Well there are the questions you asked and I answered! Remember these are my opinions and thoughts based on my experience and studies. Question everything I said. If you have any other questions on training, nutrition or how you can just be more awesome please do not hesitate to ask!

Better Personal Training is a Choice

image-3by Sandy Schluep NSCA-CPT
Take a look at all of these photos of normal people. These are clients who are not top athletes that are out there winning first place, or young athletes competing for college scholarships. Why?  Well, The Spot is for us “normal” people too.  Take me for example. Yes that’s me with her arm in a sling.  I started as a client; then became an intern; and now I'm a certified trainer here at The Spot.  Why in the world would I be training at The Spot while still recovering from rotator cuff surgery?  Answer: Because I choose to.  I choose to move forward and be stronger today than I was yesterday; not with recklessness, but with proper training, precision and safety.  I choose to not let excuses stop me.  I have a lot of other muscles that still need conditioning and The Spot is the best place for an athlete (including us normal people) of any age (from 6-76) to train and get results.  Why?  Because The Spot Athletics was designed with the individual in mind …. to do one thing, get results.

Nutrition Questions Answered Part 1

Last week I posted on our facebook wall asking what your top nutrition questions were. Well here are your questions answered to the best of my professional ability. Now do not take my responses as the end all be all. Question everything, use what is useful and get ride of what is useless!

Will a cheat meal once a week throw off my goals if I am sticking to a well balanced, clean diet?
No. Look a diet is a way of life and if you become extremely hard on yourself  when you eat a “cheat meal” you will become extremely stressed out and in the long run that is much worse. Stop listening to everybody and freaking out  that having junk food once in a while will destroy your body because guess what...IT WON’T. The human body is extremely adaptable and strong, having a cheat meal or two every week won’t make you fat. Eating food that you shouldn’t be eating on a consistent basis will make you fat. Stick to healthy foods 90% of the time and you’ll get to enjoy your body and life to its fullest. Freaking out and feeling guilty about food choices is more unhealthy then a cheat meal. So stop.

Should I even worry about calories if I’m eating healthy foods? Yes and no. I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.  Now you may ask another professional this same question and they will say yes you should. I don’t like to overcomplicate diets as I feel the best diet is the one the suits your lifestyle the best. And there is no ONE best diet. Eating healthy quality calories is what matters most. 2,000 calories from pop tarts or 2,000 calories from qualtity protein, fats and carbs its a no brainer. Stop following strict guidelines that take away your sanity and energy. Simplfy it. Stop obsessing over every little thing. There are more important things in life to be concerned with than wasting time on tiny things like a calorie.

How much dairy is too much?
I’m not a fan of dairy you buy at the grocery store and that is my opinion. Most people should remove dairy from their diet because our wonderful government has made it illegal to consume raw milk and that milk must be pasteurized well by pasteurizing the milk it makes it extremely inflammatory and allergenic. Pasteurization also causes key vitamins, enzymes and minerals to be lost. Plus pasteurized dairy is produce in some dirty milk factories. Plus how they treat animals in this industry is disgusting but thats not for here. The best milk if you can find it is raw, fresh milk. Pasteurized, homogenized milk has also been shown to promote heart disease, obesity, autoimmune disorders and many other health conditions. 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. Dairy can cause a lot of problems (acne, skin problems, bloating etc.) and it can also screw up recovery. I read a recent study that calcium in pasteurized milk has been damaged by the manufacturing process and is not absorbable by the human body. Why is it that the United States consumes the most dairy on the planet but the rate of osteoporosis is at an all time high.  But what I do recommend is eating REAL cheese as it is a quality protein and healthy fat and I know I just said don't eat dairy but this doesn't have the whole lactose and lactic acid ordeal.

How many calories should I eat? It all depends on your goal. Trying to gain weight eat a lot trying to lose weight eat less. Simple.

Feelings on chipotle? It is the most amazing thing on earth and if you are trying to gain weight eat 3-4 burritos a day or learn how to use a crock pot and eat for the week!

If I’m going to splurge and have a few drinks what is my best choice of alcohol?
Don’t splurge #1 alcohol consumed in a binge manner wrecks havoc everywhere on the body. That being said research has shown that moderate hold on let me say that again MODERATE alcohol consumption can improve insulin sensitivity, lower triglyceride concentrations and improve glycemic control. Also studies have shown that moderate drinkers live longer by protecting against arthritis, cancer, depression etc. I won’t go into the whole hormones and training and alcohol as that wasn’t the question. But I will say that the negative effects of alcohol on testosterone and recovery has been grossly exaggerated by mainstream fitness. Its all the junk people eat in conjunction.

Good choices of alcohol include dry wines, cognac, gin, rum, scotch, tequila, vodka and whiskey all have little to no carbs. Don’t drink bottom shelf as drinks should be enjoyed so drink what you like just don’t over consume, drink in moderation and enjoy life.

What’s the deal with CLA? I don’t know what the deal is with CLA but I can tell you what CLA is. CLA is an isomer of linoleic acid. It ca be found naturally in meat and milk and it is a polyunsaturated fatty acid. I won’t go into the biochemistry of it as that will most likely bore most of you. All I’m going to say is the CLA has shown to be a potent anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogen and anti-catabolite and it can also enhance your immune system. A deficiency of CLA in ones diet may be a factor in weight gain. Even though there has been a number of positive research findings regarding CLA a lot of new studies have failed to show any real significant benefits when supplementing with CLA. Reading the research you would need to most likely consume at least 500g of fat (mostly saturated) each day (over 4,500 fat calories a day) to match the intake to the levels used in studies. So I would just make sure you are getting in plenty of healthy fats daily and suggest not wasting money on just a CLA supplement.

Thoughts on glycemic load? Never really gave it much thought till I was asked this question. All glycemice load is, is a number that estimates how much food will raise a person’s blood glucose after eating it. One unit of glycemic load approximates the effect of consuming one gram of glucose. It accounts for how much carbs are in a food and how much each gram raises blood glucose levels. Ones glycemic load is based on the glycemic index and is simply defined as the grams of avaiable carbohydrate in the food times the food glycemic index divided by 100. And this is why I never gave it much thought. Its annoying and mentally draining. Now prepared to have your mind blown watermelon has a high glycemic index but does not contain much carbs therefore it’s glycemic load is low. So my thoughts now are is that this stuff is confusing and plays into what I said earlier don’t over complicate things. Glycemic load is typically used for those with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and extreme weight loss. A GI under 55 is low and a GI of 70 is high. While a GL under 10 is low and over 20 is high.

Bet most of you have heard brown rice is better then white rice well guess what it’s not. Brown rice contains phytates which is located in the bran of rice (brown rice)  making nutrients of the rice unavailable for humans to utilize. Brown rice has an awesome nutrient profile but it’s useless. White rice not much nutritional value besides carbs but is handled by the body more effectively. Rice also contains trypsin inhibitor, trypsin simply strips protein down to amino acids so the body well its not that simple but a trypsin inhibitor (found in rice...brown rice...in the bran...) inhibits the breakdown of protein into amino acids. White rice causes no harm nor benefit. All it is is an awesome carb source (does cause a insulin response as do all carbs) and can act as a vessel for other nutrients. If handle carbs well eat white rice! But it has a high glycemic index!!! Don’t start.

So my thoughts are don’t freak out about it. Make smart eating choices.

Well there are the questions you asked and I answered! Remember these are my opinions and thoughts based on my experience and studies. Question everything I said. If you would like any of the studies just ask. If you have any other questions on training, nutrition or how you can just be more awesome please do not hesitate to ask! We are here to help you!
